Alfie, survived being born 13 weeks prematurely - weighing just 2lb - and celebrated his first birthday last week.
As a result of his premature birth, Alfie has a condition called Dolichocephaly it is characterised by a long and narrow head shape. It can result from extended time spent lying on the side of the head, as premature babies in neo-natal units do. As the condition progresses it can effect the further development of the jaw causing dental problems as well as problems with vision due to the eyes being misaligned
the condition is more commonly known as Flat Head Syndrome, which means the his skull is misshapen.
Alfie needs to be fitted with a special £2,000 helmet to correct his deformity which, left untreated, could cause permanent sight or speech problems. I am unable to get the funding from our local health trust and time is fast running out for Alfie to be treated the treatment must start with in the next month for it to be successful .
little Alfie has struggled through this last year with a number of health conditions due to his prematurity ,including lung disease and a hole in his heart ,nothing can be done to cure the lung problems, but his head can be corrected and im sure any parent would agree that if something can be done to ensure their child can have a normal life then I should be done .every parent wants what is best for their child treatment is available and it is unfair that it is not obtainable for everyone .
the picture shows flattening to one side of Alfies skull. As you can see his jaw is already beginning to be pushed out of shape .
